Noted New Orleans Restaurateur Barbara Chifici Passes Away From COVID-19

Jan 25, 2021 (Getty Images) The New Orleans food and restaurant community is mourning the loss of Deanie s Seafood Restaurants owner Barbara Chifici. Family members confirmed yesterday that the 77-year-old restaurateur and philanthropist passed away from COVID-19. Dating back to the 1960s, Chifici and her late husband Frank operated Chifici s Restaurant in New Orleans and Gramboli s in Metairie before opening Deanie s Seafood Restaurant and Market in Bucktown. She was 77. A statement from the restaurant group said Mrs. Chifici died of complications from coronavirus. This past year, the Chifici family marked 38 years as owners of Deanie s, known for serving up overflowing fried seafood platters and mountains of boiled seafood.  The restaurant group employs nearly 300 people at its three properties.

She was 77. Family members say Chifici, who was also known as Mrs. Barbara, passed away late Saturday night at Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner from Coronavirus complications. Chifici, who came from a large Italian family of New Orleans restauranteurs, married her late husband Frank Chifici in 1963. The two operated two restaurants, Chifici’s Restaurant in New Orleans and Gramboli’s in Metairie, before buying the Deanie’s Seafood Restaurant and Market in Bucktown in 1982.

It is reported that Chifici died due to complications from the coronavirus. This year marked 38 years that the Chifici family has owned Deanie s. There are locations in Bucktown, the French Quarter and on Magazine St. “My mom was an inspiration to generations of culinarians and hospitality workers,” her son Darren Chifici, Deanie s general manager, said in a statement. “She instilled a genuine sense of hospitality, quality, family and pride into everything she did.” Born Barbara Anselmo, Chifici married her husband Frank Chifici in 1963. The couple operated two restaurants, Chifici s Restaurant in the Central Business District and Gramboli s in Metairie. They purchased Deanie s Seafood Restaurant & Seafood Market in Bucktown in 1982. Unfortunately, Frank died in 1985, but Barbara would stay in the restaurant business for many years.
