Grieving Central NY families include pleas in obituaries: Take Covid seriously, wear a mask

Families often ask for donations or other gifts in lieu of flowers after a loved one dies, but the coronavirus pandemic has led to another request showing up in obituaries: Wear a mask.
As the toll of Covid-19 continues and obituary pages in the newspaper fill up, some families and loved ones have chosen to write memorials to their loved ones that include details about their deaths in connection with the virus. They’ve also included public health warnings, and pleas to make measures to keep one another safe during the pandemic.

Syracuse, N.Y. Barbara Chandler died alone.
Chandler, 83, was living in a Syracuse nursing home when she was diagnosed with the coronavirus. Her family could not enter the facility not even to say goodbye before she took her painful, final breath, according to her obituary.
She died “in total agony, surrounded by no one,” her family wrote in the obituary.
“That is what Covid-19 does for the ones you love,” family members wrote.
The obituary had a message for others, too: “Please, Wear a Mask, Wash your Hands, and Social Distance.”
