Top triathlete Renwick gains a scholarship

A scholarship was always the goal for Kayla Renwick, one of the top female triathlon athletes in Barbados and with years of hard work and dedication, that dream has been made a reality.The 18-year-old has been accepted into Wagner College in Staten Island, New York City where she will pursue a degree in Sports Administration and Business with a focus on sports law as well. A student of Harrison College where she is finishing off her CAPE studies, Renwick said her enrollment at Wagner College doesn’t only feel good but also shows that hard work does pay off.   “I feel like every athlete has to put in a lot of work and with triathlon, because it is three sports in one, the work is three times as much. So, this shows that the hard work is paying off,” Renwick told Barbados TODAY.A journey that began at six years old when she first competed in triathlon has evolved into the foundation upon which Renwick will build her career and future.

Sinckler ready for officiating challenge

Barbadian Adrian Sinckler is looking forward to yet another chapter of his officiating career when he travels to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham late July.A top-ranked level two World Triathlon Technical official, Sinckler said he is happy and proud to be given such a great opportunity to travel and officiate in triathlon which is a discipline that comprises swimming, cycling and running.“I am very proud to be representing Barbados on the international stage. We are small but we have what it takes to get out there and do these things. I kind of stumbled into it because I always put my hand up that I will go for the training and it kind of led me to this,” Sinckler explained.As the sole level two technical official in Barbados, Sinckler has an extensive travel resume of officiating at major events. Five of Barbados’ best triathlon athletes have secured their place for the 2022 CARIFTA Triathlon and Aquathlon Championships to be held in Bermuda in September.The first of two qualifiers was staged yesterday at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex to determine who will represent Barbados at the fourth edition of this event. President of the Barbados Federation of Island Triathletes (BFIT), Darren Treasure, told Barbados TODAY that they are hoping to have the final team ratified in June that will train towards CARIFTA.“Things are going along smoothly. We are hoping and optimistic that CARIFTA will take place this year despite the Covid-19 surges. At first, we weren’t sure if it was going to happen but now we feel even more confident,” Treasure said.The last CARIFTA Triathlon and Aquathlon Championships was held in 2019 in Jamaica and Treasure explained that the national athletes were eager to get back out into competition.
