ZAMBOANGA CITY - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) here Friday launched Operation Baklas and started removing campaign materials put up outside the designated common poster areas. Joining the Comelec in the conduct of the drive were the Zamboanga City Police, City Engineer's Office, and the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office. Lawyer Stephen Roy Canete, 1st District election officer, urged candidates and their supporters to abide by the rules on the posting of campaign materials. Canete said candidates should also observe the allowed sizes of campaign posters and materials. "The campaign posters and tarpaulins placed in their headquarters should be three-by-eight feet only. We order them to remove all oversized materials since it violates the Comelec guidelines," he said. Smuggled cigarettes worth P79.51 million seized at the Port of Batangas in October were recently disposed of in Pampanga, the Bureau of Customs said.
The seized cigarettes were destroyed on December 5, 6, and 8 at a destruction facility located in Greenleaf 888 Waste Disposal in Barangay Mitla, Porac, Pampanga.
According to the bureau, the shipment arrived at the Port of Batangas from China on October 12. It was only declared as laptop bags.
It was alerted on October 13 based on derogatory information received by the port, Batangas Port Acting District Collector Ma. Rhea Gregorio said.
A warrant of seizure and detention was then issued against the shipment for violation of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
