Police, NPA rebels clash near Bicol International Airport

LEGAZPI CITY: An exchange of gunfire between police and the New People s Army (NPA) rebels happened near the Bicol International Airport (BIA) before dusk on Tuesday .The ongoing encounter is taking place at Barangay Alobo, Daraga Albay within the junction of the airport where strict security measures are in place.The shooting has caused a traffic jam in the area as the gun battle continued along the national highway.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to lead the inauguration of the first international airport facility south of Manila. The BIA, completed after almost 12 years at the cost of PHP4 billion, is in Barangay Alobo. It will receive commercial flights starting Wednesday (October 6), and domestic daytime flights starting Thursday (October 7). A data released by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) in Bicol reveal that construction works for the airport is now 76.8% complete. The project actually started in 2008 but technical glitches and the damages caused by typhoons in the area hindered its development.
