Metro government sues Davidson County Election Commission over referendum

Election commission agrees on number of signatures needed to trigger referendum

A referendum effort by 4 Good Government to limit Metro’s ability to raise property taxes is not dead yet. Davidson County election commissioners determined Saturday that 12,142 voter signatures — a number determined by the August election, not the November election — are needed to place the 4 Good Government petition on a ballot. Election commission staff have verified 12,398 petition signatures were submitted, according to Administrator of Elections Jeff Roberts. The commission has yet to vote that sufficient signatures have been submitted, or to vote on whether to send the matter to voters in a referendum election. According to Nashville’s Metro Charter, a charter amendment may go to voters in a referendum election if a petition is submitted with voter signatures equal to 10% of participation in the last municipal general election.
