power for one to two weeks, you can t have elderly people in those conditions in florida. they ll have to get out of the conditions. so, yes, many things will develop and unfortunately, we lose a lot of lives after storms. we get the surge to lose lives but after it goes, the chain saw accidents, the carbon monoxide cases. the dangers with us. our focus is the forecast ahead but the conditions and nassau bahamas. we ll talk more about that later. but let me bring in india atlantic. along the central eastern coast. what are people there telling you? reporter: this community south of florida s space coast, one of the most vulnerable areas. it s the area that bill was talking about. you can see the house behind me just boarded up. people here are starting to really panic and to heed governor rick scott s call.
friday. schools have also been closed, expected today and tomorrow to remain closed. joining me now is susan heene, the mayor of boca raton. at the emergency operations center. thank you so much for joining us. my pleasure. tell me, mayor, about the conditions you re expecting, what you are bracing for. our weather has begun to deteriorate. the storm is up to a category 4 and we anticipate it passing very closely to our community. i am here at the emergency operations center where we have representatives from all our chief departments, utilities, municipal services, police and fire. we are here to make certain our residents are safe as they can be through this storm. you have about 90,000 people, approximately, 90,000 in the area. the governor said many people should, at the very least,
perspective, it s our job to hype up things. this is not hype. this is real. you ve been following this minute by minute. i try to underhype things because i know everyone has a perception that the media hypes stuff. this doesn t need hype. a strong category 4 potential? that happens very rarely. i mean, especially the slightest chance from a cat 5 and the key to the whole forecast is where this eye goes and the strong winds around it. where is that going to be along the coast from late tonight all the way through pretty? this is what everybody wants to avoid. that s the center, the eye right there and to show you, the hurricane winds extend about 40 miles out from the storm. that s this area right in here. that s what you need to avoid. all of these bands, that s where you start getting power knocked out. those are tropical storm force winds. usually about 50-mile-per-hour winds as you get scattered, trees coming down. power outages. this stuff here, this is just squall type weather
