One year after a Grand Rapids Police Officer shot and killed Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop scuffle, the now fired officer is facing a murder charge.
The Grand Rapids police officer who shot and killed Patrick Lyoya following a traffic stop and struggle on April 4 will be charged with one count of second-degree murder the Kent County prosecutor announced Thursday afternoon.
Banza Mukalay said he always appreciated Patrick's presence, and merely by showing up consistently he provided an example for other young refugees to look up to.
Video of Lyoya's death has reignited protests over racial injustice. For those who knew him, he's remembered as a son, brother and father a person of faith whose life was inextricably shaped by war.
