Ambitious plans to deliver rail hub, hotel and restaurants

By Aran Dhillon, Local Democracy Reporter Bank Quay railway station AMBITIOUS plans to deliver a new rail hub surrounded by a hotel, restaurants and shops are firmly on the table – but funding will be needed. Warrington Borough Council is progressing feasibility and masterplanning work for the proposed Bank Quay Gateway, in conjunction with Homes England and Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Homes England is progressing the first part of this through its framework at the moment and has committed £70,000 towards the work. An application has been made to the LEP for £50,000 of funding, which is expected to be approved shortly.

Place North West | Land rejig to unlock Southern Gateway

Dan Whelan Warrington Council is to approve the relocation of the town’s bus depot, which would then free up land around Wilderspool Causeway for the creation of up to 1,300 homes.  Plans for a new-build bus station on Dallam Lane, proposed by Wire Regeneration – a joint venture between Warrington Council and developer Langtree – were approved in 2019.  As well as more than 1,000 homes, Wire Regeneration’s vision for the Southern Gateway of Warrington includes a commercial area fronting the south side of Bridgefoot and the River Mersey, enhanced public spaces, and a hotel.  Approval by the council’s cabinet is the next step required to progress the redevelopment of the Southern Gateway area.
