PATTANI: Authorities are gearing up to extend assistance to more residents, as the floodwater which has inundated the southern province for almost a week isn t expected to recede until later this week.
On Monday, governor Rachit Sudphum called a meeting with all agencies concerned to plan rehabilitation schemes for residents whose farms were affected by the severe floods.
Water levels are expected to recede later in the week, as the discharge at Bang Lang reservoir in Yala s Bannang Satar district was reduced at midnight on Sunday, authorities said.

High tides could exacerbate flooding in Pattani after the municipality was inundated by water overflowing the banks of the river.
Most areas in Muang district have been underwater since Saturday, when a large volume of water released from Bang Lang dam in Yala s Bannang Satar district burst the banks of the Pattani River in the municipality.
Several roads in the town centre were flooded despite machines pumping floodwater back to the river around the clock.
PATTANI (Jan 10): Severe floods following heavy rain in four provinces in southern Thailand Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and Songkhla have claimed three lives to date and affected almost 60,000 families.

“To date, three fatalities were reported, while another person is still missing,” it said.

In Pattani, several low-lying areas were flooded, following the high-tide phenomenon and water released from the Bang Lang Dam in Yala.

PATTANI: The monsoon in the southern region has now started to ease, but many areas especially those near the Pattani river remain submerged by flood waters. The water level in the Pattani river has been rising since a reservoir upstream had to start discharging water.

The water level in the Pattani river this morning (Jan 9) was close to overflowing into areas beside it, much of it water discharged from the reservoir at Bang Lang Dam upstream. It is likely that water will flood business areas in Pattani’s city center, if water from Yala flows in this direction over the next couple of days, reports state news agency NNT.

Authorities are evacuating flood-residents in Yala, as higher than average precipitation across the three southernmost border provinces since Monday have inundated over 18,000 households in the region.
As a result of the continued rain, the Sai Buri River in Yala broke its banks, inundating homes and farmlands across Raman district.
Soldiers used boats to evacuate residents and their properties, as the main road in Rueso district which connects Yala and Narathiwat was cut off by the flood.
Local government agencies also distributed food and other aid to flood-affected households in the area.
