president give any specifics about what he d like to see done in this afternoon, in those remarks, or kristen, do you think, from what you re hearing, that this is going to be more about a band-aid approach, of kicking the can down the road. reporter: i think it s going to be a band-aid approach to some extent. the president will call for a short-term lusolution to avert e sequester. that economists believe could have a negative impact on the economy. so president obama is going to make the case, we expect him to, when he speaks publicly this afternoon. for congress to come up with a solution to avert that in the short-term, for at least the next several months. and we ll make the argument that, look, they need more time before they can get a long-term solution. something that extends to ten years. of course, president obama will make the case that he believes any solution should include cuts and new revenues. that is something that republicans are staunchly opposed to. they believe
but we may see more of a band-aid approach as opposed to a big fix, although that would require the republicans give in to the president to raise taxes. house speaker john boehner did go to the white house late yesterday to meet with the president. no agreement came out of that meeting, but he said earlier in the day that he will not budge on the president s demand for almost unlimited power to raise the nation s debt ceiling as part of the deal. if push had asked the president to do that it would have been shot down. do you think there is any chance that senator obama would have done that? zero. congress is never going to give up our ability to control the purse. and the fact is the president meantime arranged interviews with a number of local tv stations to slam republicans for not agreeing to higher taxes. the big problem right now is republicans and the house are
predictions. will they get a deal done? eleanor? they ll get something i think to slip us into the new year. and even if we go over the cliff, it s really not that steep. i think they can recover. rachel. absolutely. i think they will either punt as we have seen congress do, that is not unprecedented in history, give it some kind of little band aid approach to get us to the new year, or dive over the cliff but come back and pull us up, use the rope ladder or whatever they need to do in january to work out an actual deal. loving the analogies. very good. an astonishing fact about ohio and the election and how reverend jesse jackson was in the middle of all of it. i m talking with him next.
executive order, yes, that executive order puts romney in a box, but, no, i don t think he has, as mitt romney said, i don t think that he can take the hispanic population voter bloc support for granted. less than 24 hours after mitt romney s speech, the obama campaign released the new ad we showed in introing all of this. romney saying yesterday he would work for more long-term solutions, but did he clearly and krisc ckris it will cleacry what would happen? it isn t a solution, it s a band-aid approach. the only way to get to the point where we provide some relief to this population that i think we all care about is to be able to come up with a legislative legal solution and not side step the congress, not side step the constitution. we have to be able to make sure we hold president obama accountable. he s asking hispanic voters now to be able to think, don t pay
delivering? well, so much for a champion and a partner in the white house. frankly, since president obama took office we have had 2 million more hispanics in poverty. we have 11% unemployment among the hispanic population. he spent the first 2 1/2 years he was in office when he promised that he would address immigration reform, he did absolutely nothing to move forward a legislative solution and he comes out five months before an election with an executive order that doesn t have the force of law behind it as a way to pander to the hispanic vote. absolutely the dream act, young people see this as an encouraging sign but they also know this is a temporary solution. it s a band-aid approach. it s not a solution that gives us any concrete certainty to people who are looking for a solution they can hang their hat on. governor romney when he gave his speech yesterday, he says he will move forward with real concrete solutions working in a bipartisan ways with leaders of
