because they have polls that tell them they will be rewarded if they fail to respond and stop the locals from responding, and so i am challenging that. it will play out in court. what is interesting to me, mayor, is what the judge just said that a lot of what is happening is going to play out in courts. while it does, it leaves local leaders like yourself in the state of florida in the position of running up against the limit of what is being set by the state government, and what do you make of your own governor s ban on mask mandates? i always have been a proponent of masks from the very beginning. i also commended the governor in the back of the pandemic when he allowed local governments to make decisions, and he came to miami and urged people to follow
for people to be comfortable with that idea. but i think we re starting to see that with vaccination requirements for adults. at some point we are going to see that vaccinations for children is really important to keep them safe and to stop the spread of this pandemic. dr. wen, as always, thanks so much for your expertise. thank you, michael. many florida parents aren t happy about the governor s new ban on mask mandates as i just referenced. and some are now suing. two of those parents join me. john and robin mccarthy. their son is heading into first grade. he has asthma. welcome to the prime time, the mccarthys. ms. mccarthy, tell me about your son. what s the issue here? the governor by passing his executive order took away our choice. so we re now basically being told that if we do not attend the school in person we lose our spot at our magnet school, which was very hard to get into.
kids are getting ready to gook to school in the fall, but if they are under 12, they can t get vaccinated. now, permanently, having covered this for over a year and a half, i think it s clear we have to do whatever we can to get kids back to school in person. that seems a consensus, thankfully. what that means is adults work manager the schools need to get vaccinated. the schools need to take steps to minimize transmission among the children. despite a recommendation by the cdc that kids wear masks we re seeing pressure groups raging against school masking across the country. in fact, it took a judge to stop a ban on mask mandates on schools in arkansas because the republican legislature wouldn t repeal the law despite pleas from their own governor. he said he regretted it. thanks to an executive order from governor desantis.

we re hearing and this is why we need this? oh, yes, and here s the thing, the science is changing and we want to ensure we are staying up to date with the science. in may when we took away the masks the first time, didn t push down like he has now, things were looking better, things are not better. and the governor needs to understand that. and that s the governor needs to take that into account and change his mind and make our students safe. ovidia, i have 30 seconds left with you. there s a ban on mask mandates in iowa city, and the washington post is reporting that parents are asking the district there to educate masked and unmasked students separately. i don t even know the logistics of that, there s already a teacher shortage in so many school districts, is that an option worth considering? that s the other issue we re screaming at the governor, he s creating chaos in our schools. our students can follow rules. we have faith in our students. but he is creating a we do
