Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has vetoed a bill that would make the city’s elected officials eligible for a pension after eight years instead of the current 12.
Baltimore’s Board of Ethics has asked Mayor Brandon Scott to delay a decision on legislation passed by the City Council that would change pension eligibility requirements saying it is a potential violation of the city’s ethics ordinance.
The Baltimore City Council gave final approval to a proposal to cut the number of years required for its members and other city officials to earn a pension Monday, faulting a charter amendment establishing term limits that was overwhelmingly approved by voters this month.
Arguing that its hands were tied by the likely implementation of term limits, the Baltimore City Council advanced a bill Monday reducing the number of years required for elected officials to receive a pension.
A bill that will decrease the number of years Baltimore elected officials need to earn a pension from 12 to eight was advanced by a Baltimore City Council committee Thursday.
