The benefits of growing quality trees in hedgerows

I’m lucky that during lockdown I can walk straight out my front door and go for walk up a nice, quiet country lane. On the day I’m writing this, the weather isn’t great, but I was amazed the difference a few roadside trees can make. Sections along the lane where there are trees in the roadside hedges are so much more sheltered, with less rain and wind. I can now fully appreciate why animals (and crops) enjoy such shelter. And that is the point my colleague Kevin O’Connell made in a recent video: trees can add so much to farm hedges.

On-the-ground learning opportunities with Teagasc national colleges

This is particularly relevant among those of us interested in agriculture and horticulture. With this learning type in mind, Teagasc provides a range of hands-on education and training programmes at their colleges nationwide. Agriculture Study a level five certificate in agriculture at one of the six Teagasc-approved agricultural colleges across the country. While each of the colleges are unique, they all provide a practical educational experience and a QQI-approved level five qualification, which will allow students to progress to a level six course or embark on a successful career in agriculture.

Teagasc to host Europe-wide agri-education event

Teagasc to host Europe-wide agri-education event Teagasc will play host to a major Europe-wide event on agricultural extension and education later this year. The European Seminar on Extension and Education, a biennial event, will be hosted by Teagasc Ballyhaise College from June 21 to 23 this year. The event will be hosted in collaboration with University College Dublin (UCD) and Northern Ireland’s College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE). The conference will be delivered online due to Covid-19. The title of the conference this year is: ‘Learning for Life. Continuous innovation support through extension and education for suitable farm communities.’
