The canopy of a Des Plaines gas station collapsed early Monday morning, unable to support the overnight snow, officials said.
The canopy over the fuel pumps at 7-Eleven on the 2500 block of Ballard Road collapsed at 12:30 a.m., Des Plaines Deputy Fire Chief Pete Dyer said in an email. The owner of the store said he heard a loud noise before discovering the collapse.

Des Plaines gas station collapsed under the weight of snow early Monday as an
inch of snow fell on parts of the Chicago area.
No one was under the structure when it fell about 12:30 a.m. at a 7-Eleven in the 2500 block of Ballard Road, according to Des Plaines Deputy Fire Chief Pete Dyer.
The owner of the business told investigators he heard a loud noise and then saw the collapse, Dyer said in an emailed statement.
The power to the fuel pumps was shut off until the debris is cleared and equipment inspected, he said. The Des Plaines Building Department and Fire Prevention Bureau were investigating the collapse.

A 21-year-old Chicago man has been charged with carjacking a woman last month in suburban Niles.
Phillip Roloson faces felony counts of vehicular hijacking and attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking of a person over 60-years-old, Niles police said.
The woman was in her vehicle about 12:16 p.m. Jan. 21 in the 8000 block of Ballard Road when three males in a light-colored SUV pulled up in front of her, police said.
One of the males got out, pointed a gun at the woman and demanded her purse, police said. The woman complied and the suspects fled.
Roloson was arrested Friday at his North Mayfair neighborhood home, police said.

The teen was taken into custody by a different law enforcement agency, but is facing an armed robbery charge in Niles, Niles police said. He faces similar charges in Morton Grove, Addison, Chicago and from Illinois State police.
