BEREA, Ohio While many college theaters went dark for the fall 2020 theatrical season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the creative team at Baldwin Wallace University proved that musical theater is still able to thrive even within the limits of coronavirus safety measures.
The college, located in Berea, Ohio, staged a virtual production of the powerful Broadway rock musical “Spring Awakening.” The show premiered at more than 40 locations throughout northeast Ohio Nov. 19-22 and was profiled in American Theatre magazine and The New York Times. Due to demand, a second of performances streamed Dec. 17-20.
The show was filmed “guerrilla” film-style on iPhones and then streamed to audiences who were able to watch the production from the comfort of their own homes. Part of the creativity team in bringing the musical to life was Adrian High School graduate Jacqueline Adams, a current theater stage management major at Baldwin Wallace University.
