Knoxville may have canceled its St. Patrick’s Day parade again this year, but there are plenty of other ways to celebrate.
The holiday is rooted in religious tradition, venerating St. Patrick, who converted Ireland to Christianity in the fifth century.
Jim Wogan, director of communications for the Catholic Diocese of Knoxville, says St. Patrick’s story “is among one of the most compelling” of all Catholic saints.
“He was born in Scotland and as a child he was kidnapped, taken to Ireland as a slave,” Wogan explained. “He later escaped, returned to Britain, and later, as an adult, became a Catholic priest and bishop, returning to Ireland to fulfill his religious mission.”
