Only a few hours after voting was concluded, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele declared his victory with more than 85 percent of the vote on Feb. 4.
This situation falls under the category of climate justice or, actually, climate injustice: vulnerable groups are more heavily impacted by extreme weather events fomented by others, whether at the national or global level.
Bukele’s regime has already imprisoned over 73,000 people since March 2022. Human rights activists object that many such detentions are unjustified and involved racial or class profiling.
