baggage claims. southwest has said these cancellations and delays could go on for several more days meaning it may be the weekend before many passengers can even rebook. here s more from a southwest spokesperson. obviously facing some operational challenges this evening with winter storm elliott. that has kind of moved on to include some challenges with our flight crews being stuck in locations the where they need to be along with the aircraft. you know, at this point we re working to accommodate our customers as best we can and offer the most options that we can to get folks back home or to their vacation spots or holiday celebration spot at this point. this is the main focus now is to try to take care of our customers as quickly as we can and get them out of this line and with their loved ones or somewhere where they can get some rest. that s our primary concern. the u.s. transportation department is growing concerned and looking into the matter calling the massive disruptions
and get to have you with, us it is the nightmare after christmas, thousands of flights are being canceled across the u.s.. after the monster arctic storm that pummeled much of the country over the holiday. and for southwest airlines in particular, it is and other catastrophe. right now, the flight tracking website flightaware shows more than 2700 total cancellations in the u.s. on tuesday. and of those, more than 90% of southwest flights. the company says it is been forced to scale back its flight schedule to get operations back on track, and get crews in the right places. southwest ceo says it is the largest scale event he has seen. meanwhile, passengers are stranded at airports struggling to get answers on when they will be able to reach their destinations. we have seen incredibly long lines at the airline counters, and tons of luggage piling up baggage claims.

MANCHESTER, N.H., May 20, 2021 /PRNewswire/ MANCHESTER-BOSTON REGIONAL AIRPORT (MHT) is excited to announce the resumption of service to Washington, D.C., on United Airlines beginning in June. United will operate two daily flights, starting June 3, 2021, between Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). This will increase to three daily flights in July.
United Airlines was last at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in May 2020.
United Airlines will fly 50-seat CRJ-200s on the nonstop route from MHT to IAD. As travel continues to return this summer, we are excited to resume more flights to popular destinations like between Manchester, N.H., and Washington, D.C., said Ankit Gupta, vice president of domestic planning and scheduling at United. June is historically the beginning of the peak summer travel season, and United is ramping up to over 3,500 total daily flights across our system this June
this is after a very chaotic day on sunday when that water pipe that actually feeds into a sprinkler system for terminal 4 broke, cascading water into the terminal and baggage claim. sitting in the baggage claims were hundreds of bags sitting there because of the big winter storm that hit on thursday, which left lots of cancellations for airlines, lots of delays. so there was a lot of mixup with baggage. the baggage wound up getting is soaked. and the machinery that moves the baggage, it broke that machinery as well. there was so much confusion about gates and where planes should go, many say they sat on planes for hours. alisyn? what a nightmare. let s hope they are fixing all of that for the rest of the day. thanks so much. chris? big sports weekend. a clash of the college football
departure airport. many of them were diverted. the power outage affected all airlines at the airport including atlanta based delta which canceled nearly 1,000 flights on sunday. today the airline has scaled that back. canceling only 300 flies. mos300 flights.most of them inbd flights. the airport is rapidly returning to normal. again, passengers can expect long lines at ticket counters and baggage claims. get here with plenty of time to spare. and then as far as what caused this outage, georgia power says it was an electrical fire in an underground station. it didn t injure anyone. firefighters got the flames under control, but not before they spread to other substations affecting redundant backup systems servicing this airport. back to you guys. brian: all right. thanks, jonathan. great. hopefully things will get better and people will be back on flights. four minutes after the top of the hour. it s going to be a big week.
