Short North Stage actors live together to make live production

Five artists have demonstrated their dedication to theater by quarantining together to produce a play for Short North Stage, the first Ohio professional theater approved for such in-person work. After isolating separately for two weeks, rehearsing via Zoom and getting tested four times for COVID-19, Artistic Director Edward Carignan and four actors lived and rehearsed together for another six days starting Jan. 18 at a rented house in the Short North. While staying indoors  and away from family and friends  they prepared, performed and recorded the dark comedy “Bad Jews” without needing to wear masks or socially separate onstage. With special permission from Actors’ Equity Association, the national union for stage actors and stage managers, Short North Stage followed pandemic-era protocols to keep everyone safe during each step producing the off-Broadway hit, which will stream Thursday through Feb. 14.
