it looks that way to me now. what does he need to do to avoid having the same fate as jimmy carter, being a one-term president? he s got to connect with the american people. he s got to the american people have to feel that the president senses and and the suffering they re going through and wants to be a part of the solution. he s got a lot of strength, but that connectivity, that ability to to transmit the fact that he feels for people, i think, is something he needs to work on. i notice he s doing more of these backyard events where he gets in close with a small group of people. i think that s part of what he should do. he s not feeling people s pain the way bill clinton was capable of feeling pain. why is that? why do you think he s not capable, at least so far, of
really doing that? well, i ve seen places where he s done it. the milwaukee speech, i thought, was terrific. i think some of these backyard events are terrific. but i but i think he he s very bright. matter of fact, brilliant. and i think he tends to and he uses these idiot boards to read speeches in television and i think he loses the connection that he needs emotionally. with american voters. you re talking about the teleprompter that he always has when he s delivering a formal speech. right. you don t think that works. is that what you re saying? yeah. i think, you know, if you re looking at the teleprompter, you re here, you re here, you re here. and you re your audience is right there. and i think he needs to do more of that. a fair point. there s certainly an angry atmosphere across the country right now. the tea party movement, clearly is gaining strength.
like this in the coming weeks. wolf? thank you, dan lothian. the president has done four of the backyard events in recent weeks which got us wondering how does the white house pick the location? we know that they pick a scenic neighborhood in the case of iowa they picked a suburb of beautiful oak trees and then look for people who have benefitted from the administration s policies. eight families made the cut, but jeff and sandy club, middle-class parents of two say they were ultimately selected because of their big backyard. they say it was like winning the lottery without even buying a ticket. there is new controversy swirling around the tea party movement that backed delaware senate candidate christine o donnell, and claims on the resume, and brian todd is looking into this story, and she is certainly not the only candidate facing this kind of controversial issue. she is not, wolf. a few other candidates have got caught making false statements
wild excitement from the campaign two years ago, that they have to really be patient for the president s promises to come to fruition. the president acknowledged, he said, look. this is not a time to get beyonce and bono out there campaigning with us but that he is trying and that it s really important for the young voters to come out in the mid-term elections and the way to full till the agenda. as i said before, some of the students said, yes, they ll go ahead and participate five weeks from now. others not so sure and at least coming out to take a listen to what the president had to say. kyra? how does the white house actually choose the families that host these backyard events, suzanne? reporter: well, one of the advantages, kyra, of being here at 4:30 in the morning had a chance to talk to the couple, jeff and sandy club. this is their home behind us here. and the white house doesn t really give away a lot of information but they did. they said a week ago they got a
terrible story, no matter how you look tat. thanks so much. chris lawrence at the pentagon. we re going back, i believe, to albuquerque, new mexico. is that right, guys? where the president is in the backyard of a home. he s shaking hands. this is one of his backyard events that he has been holding. trying to show, we re told, by suzanne malveaux that he is in touch with the average america. there s a couple of average american there s shaking his hands, and one of those saluting. right back after this.
