knocked us off the air immediately. all the lights went out. all of the television went out. we immediately came back on from our backup generator only to discover pictures had been thrown from the walls, computers had been turned upsidedown. people were calling me in, mark they were safe or find out if certain schools. we had maybe two or three different schools that had the roof collapse. a couple schools caught an on fire. a lot of flooding downtown right after that. a tsunami warning hit and evacuations started for downtown. but no traffic signals, nothing to kind of direct people. so it was immediate gridlock and just craziness. and i don t know if you guys realize, alaska, around this time of year, there is not much sunlight. so a lot of darkness has gone on. a lot of confusion. 57d like literally, it was kind of like a little beirut, like you could look out of the window
joins me now from miami. september 20th. hard to believe it s been seven months. puerto rico still struggling with its power grid. how concerned be officials on the island this is going to become the new norm? reporter: craig, it s certainly a frustrating day for them as they feel like they are back at square one. seven months after hurricane maria swept their island. this is the first all-island blackout since that hurricane came seven months ago, and they have had a continual struggle to keep power restored to residents. we are told by power officials it could be anywhere between 24 to 36 hours to restore this power. that is not good news for the people there in the dark at this point. their main priority, being able to keep power at hospitals and airports. their two top priorities at this point. we have been told that san juan s airport is operational at this point using backup generator. but the problems have been
