walsh. reporter: obviously the background chatter now continues to be about security, particularly with this new threat. very specific about flights coming from europe into russia. we found actually to fly from moscow down to sochi with liquids in your carry on, they re trying to prohibit that. any type of explosive can be extremely damaging. it could be enough to bring a plane down. reporter: airlines with direct flights to russia on alert this morning. the department of homeland security issuing another terror bulletin warning about the possibility that explosive materials could be concealed in toothpaste or cosmetic tubes on flights headed to the olympic games in sochi. the possible devices intended either to be detonated on the flights themselves or smuggled
we saw helicopters constantly circling over the venue. that s a feeling of a ring of steel here. of course that background chatter of threats persists ashleigh. every time i see a headline about the sochi games, it is security threat related, or a disaster, debacle, nothing is ready, a mess. what is it like to be there? does it feel like what it sounds like? reporter: a lot of people are waiting for the joy to kick in. i think we ll see a lot of that in the opening ceremony. we saw a practice run of the fireworks. you re right, there s a background noise of problems. the security is certainly an issue. we re not seeing flocks of tourists flooding the streets. bars and restaurants aren t heeding at this particular stage. that may well el change in forth
happened at benghazi, a lot of lessons were learned. there was a strong internal review, and one of that was to the extent there is at least background chatter about the targeting of hard targets, which would be an embassy, we ought to alert our embassy officials, close it down at least close the embassies down on sunday. there s another reason for the administration going this public. why is that? and that has to do with disrupting a planned attack. if the terrorists know, if these cells know, that we re aware they re planning something, you know, if they wait until another day, that s a victory. i know it s not perfect, but that s essentially the way it works. a delayed terrorist attack or one that they decide to wait is actually a success given how difficult it is to monitor this stuff worldwide. and then what is the criteria that would be measured to make the decision to reopen these embassies and consulates when that day comes? right. it may be that some are open and
confirmed that, that for a while there s been background chatter the last couple months suggesting something is being planned and the last couple days and what would explain these alerts is more specific information. that is coming from foreign intelligence agencies in yemen and elsewhere, so it s a combination of the monitoring of communications as well as what foreign intelligence agencies are telling us at this stage. so that would explain both why the specific embassies are closed but also the worldwide alert. we heard earlier from the former u.s. ambassador to iraq saying this is unprecedented in his view. my dad worked with the state department and embassies in asia, africa, and the middle east for more than 30 years, and never has an embassy closure of this caliber does anyone ever remember anything like this happening. so in your view does it have a lot to do with the precaution as a result of benghazi, what happened before, during, after? absolutely, and we would hope so.
