reporter: maddy davis is reeling after trying to fulfill his son jackson s back-to-school list. it s a preschool list. jacks is four. we hit $100. now we hit $150. we re at $200. and once i hit $200 i just stopped. this is way out of my budget. where are i going to pull $200 from. reporter: the mom says the shopping this year was papers, pencils and price increases. just this, i probably put it around $75. reporter: and it s not complete. no, it s not complete. reporter: just 36% of parents say they can afford back-to-school supplies, compared to 52% last year. but even with inflation straining budgets, families are expected to spend an average of $864 on school items, $15 more than in 2021. back to school is an essential category, meaning families will prioritize it no matter what s going on, including when they see higher prices. reporter: 38% of parents

something else because when you re an educator the little eyes that are looking at you are the need. reporter: and even though individual u.s. households are expected to spend more on back-to-school supplies this year, the national retail federation actually says that overall u.s. spending on back to school is going to be the same as last year. that s because parents are spending more on these individual items but are cutting back on overall spending because of inflation. if you remember last year we were warning people about supply chain issues, saying you have to get out early, you have to buy your back-to-school supplies. this year retailers they brought things in early, they actually have some excess and parents they were listening because 56% of shoppers started shopping for back to school in july of this year, compare that to 2019 before the pandemic, it was 44%. so there is supply this year unfortunately, it s just going to cost a little bit more. your pants, john, for your ki
