that would need to be done. that would be a good trade. we put that on the table before. that s what we ought to do. president said that he would sign a clean bill. if he s gonna say let s add some things, then let s add some things. reporter: democrats and republicans are not talking about any back room deal to avoid a shutdown at this point, at least not that anybody knows about. democrats really don t seem like they re in a rush to help the gop here. the longer this drags on, the more opportunities they ve got to blame president trump s maneuvering. just 48 hours ago the white house said this was fine. now it s getting to the house and president says, by the way, i m backing out of the deal. now i want $5 billion. what is he willing to give for the $5 billion? he s willing to say, i will not punish 800,000 federal employees at christmas time. you do not negotiate with a bully. that s not an offer.
i tend to believe there was no backroom deal. nancy pelosi is very good at showing you how her power work and that s what we got shown. here is the deal, though. i don t think any of us doubted. she said she would be a transitional figure way back in the day. there had been talk for months that she would agree to two years, in this case four years, that she ll have to put some kind of limitation or term on this. we saw what happened. in the end, no one was running against her. do you disagree? nancy pelosi could have gone you believe tim ryan when he says, yeah, this wasn t a figure leaf? we actually got some stuff? the deal makes all the sense in the world politically speaking.
i m not sure if that was accurate. i haven t gotten a read on that. she s that shy about criticizing him ever in public. for somebody who makes her living by criticizing this president, you think she would want every camera in the room. if she s certain he s saying false things, set all of the camera and everybody to report on it. take it back from politics and a companying stand point, which is what she s doing here, you would want that if you believe you are in the right. you don t if you don t believe you are in the right. i think she gets that. laura: why are democrats always against a lot of republicans were against the back room deal. a smoke-filled room where all of the decisions are made. all of the people say this is how you dumb little people are going to live. we made the decisions. this cameras come in, we see
this is an important week. so there will be michael flynn s sentencing memo. so we will know in the public for the first time really what michael flynn has offered up, what michael flynn did, what the deal was with sergey kislyak the ambassador who he was trying to work a back room deal with sanctions. paul manafort, we will also know more about his ken tensing, an interesting development from the new york times this morning, there was talk that paul manafort had gone to ecuador to do something with julian assange. here is a little bit more information for you both about that. in at least two meetings with mr. manafort mr. moreno who was the incoming president at that time in ecuador and his aides discussed the desire to rid themselves of mr. assange in exchange for concessions like debt relief from the united states according to three people familiar with these talks. they said mr. man fort suggested he could help negotiate a deal for the handover of mr. assange to the united states
read my lips, no new taxes. we thought that was an interesting comment, and it kwaeucame back to haunt him. understanding george herbert walker bush, he believed in payi paying dues and in public service and he believed in what could be done together, flaws and all. no new taxes came back to haunt him because he decided it was best for the country to cut down on the deficit and to raise taxes, and to go back on the campaign promise, and he decided at great political peril for himself, and that seems to be a bygone time. he believed in the back room deal and believed in working washington in a way washington no longer works, and he didn t have a ton of legislative accomplishments, and even in foreign affairs, dealing with the chinese in a quieter way after tianamen s square.
