Historically Speaking: Pine Hill offers view of Dover past and present By Tony McManus Here is more about Dover s hills. Moving south from Tuttle Square and the top of Plato s Hill is Pine Hill. We associate this now with the cemetery, but there is actually a height of land on the northerly side with a fine view over the city leading the eye to Garrison Hill at the far end.  As mentioned recently, this was the site of the third Meetinghouse in 1710, and in 1731 one and a half acres adjacent were set aside by the town as a burial ground. This was also the location of an early schoolhouse. Over the years additional land has been purchased and added to the cemetery, reaching out beyond Watson Street and along Court Street to the foot of what has been known as Mt. Dover s Ward 4 council candidates make pitches for seat

DOVER – The two people seeking to serve as the Ward 4 city councilor for the remainder of the year made their cases to the City Council this week. Former Ward 4 City Councilor Marcia Gasses and Ward 4 resident Mark Speidel talked Wednesday about their qualifications and why they’re interested in serving as Ward 4 councilor. Former Ward 4 councilor Joshua Manley formally resigned in December after missing two months of City Council meetings. The City Council is scheduled to pick Manley’s replacement at its Jan. 27 meeting, and that person will be sworn in that night. Speidel, a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and retired financial advisor, told the council he’s lived in Ward 4 for 15 years.

Santa s coming to Dover, and there s more

Fosters Daily Democrat Dover Main Street will bring Santa Claus to the city this Saturday, Dec. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. Dover Mayor Robert Carrier will drive Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus in a convertible with Dover Fire and Rescue and Dover Police escorting them to bring holiday cheer to residents. The route is scheduled to travel through Silver Street, Arch Street and Whittier Street. The route continues on Sixth Street to Ironwood Lane, Cottonwood Drive, Wildwood, Boxwood Lane, Foxtail Ridge Road, and Olive Meadow Lane. The Santa route is then scheduled to go through Glenwood Avenue and neighborhoods such as Crescent Avenue and Glencrest Avenue. From there, the route is expected to head through Horne Street, Maple Street, Grove Street, and Mount Vernon Street.

40-home project in Dover approved after opposition DOVER The city Planning Board granted site plan approval for a 40 single-family home development off Leather’s Lane. The board received a number of emails with concerns about the project, but voted unanimously Tuesday night to grant site plan approval for the project being developed by Michael “Mick” Khavari of Portsmouth. Khavari is poised to build the 40 single-family homes on a 16-acre site as part of a condominium association, according to documents filed with the city. Attorney FX Bruton, who represents Khavari, referenced to the recent site visit the board conducted of the proposed development, which he said “went very well.”

Vote expected on 40-home Dover project opposed by residents DOVER – The city Planning Board is expected to vote Tuesday night on a proposal to build 40 single-family homes near the Leather’s Lane and Back River Road neighborhoods. The board previously voted at its November meeting to table a public hearing on the proposed development to hold a site walk. The vote came after several residents at the November meeting raised concerns about the development, and 17 others emailed their concerns to the board. Danielle Alley is a resident of the nearby Fords Landing Condominiums and emailed her concerns to the board before Tuesday’s meeting.
