As a third-culture individual based in the UAE, and with professional and cultural ties to Europe, Middle East and South-East Asia, I have always been on a quest for a homeland. And I have begun to understand and appreciate Syria for what it is since I returned in 2019 for the first time since the war broke out.

For TV reporter Clarissa Ward, a visit to Damascus brought a connection with the Middle East that forged her career I first travelled to Baghdad in June 2005, as a news desk producer for Fox News, then quit my job and moved to Beirut to set myself up as a freelance field producer, travelling back and forth between the Lebanese and Iraqi capitals for work.Â The stints in Baghdad were intense, so I decided in September to take a two-week holiday to Damascus, in Syria. I wanted to go somewhere in the Middle East where I could walk around and get a much more authentic experience, because in Beirut everyone spoke English or French.Â
