Graduate workers in America’s higher education system are organizing in response to high tuition fees, cuts to staff and faculty positions, reduced budgets and suppressed graduate workers’ right to organize unions. College and university administrations have introduced the measures in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Job losses have been substantial at US universities and colleges, as student enrollment has declined and reduced public funding for higher education at the state level is leading to drastic budget cuts.
The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center reported in December a decline in enrollment of students at postsecondary institutions of 2.5% compared with fall 2019, driven largely by sharp drops in enrollment of undergraduate freshmen at public two-year institutions.

Jan. 20, 2021 – The State Bar of Wisconsin’s election cycle is in full swing and this year’s president-elect candidates, Odalo Ohiku and Margaret Hickey, are vying for the position, a one-year term before serving a one-year term as president.
In April, the State Bar membership will elect a president-elect, as well as other officer positions, including a State Bar treasurer and a Judicial Council representative. Those elected will take office at the start of the fiscal year, July 1, 2021.
The State Bar’s Nomination Committee has tapped Hickey and Ohiku, both of Milwaukee, as candidates to ultimately lead the organization.
The Nomination Committee customarily chooses candidates in a rotation between Madison, Milwaukee, and the pool of candidates in greater Wisconsin. Whoever is elected will succeed Cheryl Daniels, who takes over as president on July 1.
Milwaukee police investigate shooting near Marquette campus

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee police were dispatched to a shooting near the Marquette University campus on Saturday night, Dec. 19.
Police said the shooting took place near 19th and state around 10 p.m. A 53-year-old man was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive. The incident is road rage related, police said.
A Marquette University safety alert states that the victim is not affiliated with the university and that he was shot in the stomach.
