BU must do more to address racism on campus and locally Doris Turkel is an undeclared freshman.
As a predominantly white institution, BU has a responsibility to enforce strong consequences for racism on campus
April 15, 2021
During the second week of my sociology class this semester, our professor Joshua Price brought to the class’s attention a racial incident that had occurred in a discussion section. A student had said a string of slurs while referring to a teaching assistant (TA), who is a woman of color. My initial reaction was how horribly ironic it was that in a class devoted to the unpacking of patterns of oppression, a student would say such a disgusting and racially charged statement. I also wondered what consequences the student would face. Unfortunately, it is unknown whether the student has faced any consequences besides dropping the course.
Students warned as COVID-19 cases surge at BU
BU reports 140 positive COVID-19 cases, Brian Rose points to student gatherings
Three weeks after the semester began, Binghamton University is seeing its worst COVID-19 spread yet.
In a B-Line News Addition on March 3, Brian Rose, vice president for student affairs, confirmed that the University is seeing 40 to 50 new positive COVID-19 cases every day, with the majority of these cases being students.
As of March 3, the University has 140 positive cases for the Feb. 27 to March 12 14-day period. With SUNY seeing 497 positive cases overall, BU alone makes up roughly 28 percent of this total.
According to Rose, the University’s testing center tests roughly 2,000 people daily. Currently, 154 students are in isolation housing and 122 are in quarantine housing. Rose said the University is providing numerous services to these students, including meal delivery, daily health checks, package deliveries, academic support and birthday message

A recent rise in COVID-19 cases have led to measures students may feel are inadequate
March 4, 2021
Earlier today, Binghamton University Vice President Brian Rose sent out a B-Line News Addition to the BU community. COVID-19 cases are on the rise and we are nearing our 5 percent infection threshold that mandates BU to move fully online if surpassed. In the statement, Rose stated that there are 154 students in isolation on campus and 122 students in quarantine housing. Those in quarantine housing have been sent to one of two local hotels. Rose went on to say that he didn’t want “to throw blame around,” listed several reports of off-campus gatherings and concluded by asking students to “be a member of our campus community and not just a consumer of our services.”
