Australian way are used against us. The government is required to respond to these new threats and to make sure that our agencies have the resources and the powers that they need to do so. Thats why weve committed 630 million for our counterterrorism package, as well as introducing to the Parliament Three trenches of legislation that strengthens the ability of our agencies such as the Australian Federal police to deal with these increased threats. Were also working very hard with vulnerable communities to counter violent ideologies and encourage social harmony. Our Law Enforcement and intelligence communities have for years since 9 11 been very effective about keeping australia and australians safe. But we need to constantly refine the way they operate and seek to make improvements when we can. As many in this room know today. Development on federal land is what i think we need to get to. Because as senator hoeven says, youre just going to go around your federal lands and then we get no revenue to the treasury it just doesnt make sense. So we need to work in that regard. With that, i appreciate you have given the committee a lot of time and senator cant well if you want to have the final word i would just say thank you madam chair for this hearing and i think a lot of members showed up and a lot of questions across the board and i get your point about federal lands and, yes, im sure that theres a higher percentage in alaska than in Washington State. In Washington State we get revenue from those public lands and so thats been a big benefit to us. I want to work with you as we move forward on trying to think about an Energy Package and what we can do together to bolster our economies and to Work Together on policies that can move us forward. We have to do more outreach into the hispanic and africanamerican community. I think the ideas that we offer to those can to those communities are ideas of empowerment, toys, ideas of improving your station in life but if we dont show up, we cannot have those conversations, so it may sound simple to say, but showing up is going to be a big part of that equation. So we begin tonight with a new ruling on the nsa spying controversy. A federal judge ruled at the time legal for the National Security agency to collect socalled metadata from persons cell phone. A week ago another judge ruled it basically violated are rights. John terrett could you tell us . Half us think its a good idea because it keeps us safe, the other half thinks its terrible. And now members of the judiciary. Not just any members of the judiciary, two federal judges, district judges, pretty high up, one in new york, one in washington, d. C, coming to completely different conclusions on basically the same issue. Take a look. In his ruling federal judge William Pauley of new york, connected fragmented and fleeting communications. He said the 9 11 attacks might have been prevented if the phone Data Collection system had existed then to help investigators connect the dots before the attacks occurred. Emergency jobless benefits, a life line for the unemployed, is set to expire on saturday. 1. 3 Million People who have been out of work for a month will be cut off. The average recipient will lose out on 1,000 each and every month. The benefit program was introduced in 2008 at the height of the recession. Since then the payouts cost the government 20 billion. Extending it for a year will cost another 19 billion. Congress has not done that yet. More than a million unemployed will lose benefits because the Unemployment Program was allowed to expire before Congress Took its break. Since 2008 the federal government has supplied benefits to unemployed workers when state benefits run out. Usually after 26 weeks, as long as 73 weeks in some states. Michigans Unemployed People will be hit. 45,000 people will lose access right away. 145,000 some time next year. I get 161 a week after taxes. 56yearold frons is one of them. Bring norbert franza
