issue of patriotism. what do you mean by that? this is how a reporter can pick up on something just by listening. axios s alexi mccammond was at a democratic governors meeting in new orleans and noticed that two of the parties rising star, wes moore, elected governor in maryland, josh shapiro, elected governor in pennsylvania kept referring to freedom and patriotism. wes moore, who was in the 82nd airborne in the army and afghanistan, he talked about patriotism, some form of that word seven times. josh shapiro talked about freedom 14 times in his remarks, and the reason for this is concern about the democratic brand. jonathan, you have seen the polling that shows that democrats are worried that many people in the country perceive the party as being out of touch with the values of many americans. this is an effort to fix that. all right. good reporting there as always from our friends at axios. mike allen, thank you very much. and thanks to all of you for

is in charge of the reports asking why they delayed it so long. we haven t heard anything back, but constituents are being left in the dark right now. and, lachlan, do we have a sense that following up, does the house of representatives have a similar requirement? have they been doing this? i think there s a big picture, good government question here? the house has a similar requirement and they re up to date on their reports. they do it quarterly rather than semiannually but their reports go through december 31st of last year as they re required to. the senate is dragging their feet here. they say they re going to put it out as soon as possible but they ve been saying it for months and there s no word when they might do it. axios s lachlan markay. thank you for being here. the president tried to pivot back to domestic issues, guns yesterday, fuel prices today, but, of course, the war in ukraine shadows everything he

democrats push to sell the new house competition bill. yeah. well so democrats in the house, particularly front line members who are up for reelection in a lot of districts where they re really vulnerable, they want to run on a package about jobs, they want to run on a package about inflation. these are some of the key attacks republicans are going after them for, and because the biden agenda has so far stalled i mean build back better really not seeing a lot of progress and failing to get over the hump. the same thing with comprehensive voting rights legislation. they need a win. this bill, competes act, the america competes act which is the version of the senate bill would need to be a china bill, to compete with china for research, development and innovation and helping to bring the u.s. up to a level that could compete on the global scale. but these house democrats, these vulnerable front line members

rain maker. he s a donor lure. so it is a benefit to having him on the podcast but it also comes at a time when trump s popularity is sagging. there s been multiple polls looking at that. he s obviously facing a lot of heat with the january 6th investigation and, of course, after that very controversial speech where he talked about potentially pardoning january 6th rioters. so it does offer him a little bit of legitimacy. at the same time we also know that he is not on good terms with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell, and that s why i always think the choice to have donald trump on a senate republican campaign arm podcast as the first guest is quite interesting, particularly as we continue to see the feud between mcconnell and trump play out. yeah, you just nailed the dynamic there. not on good terms is an understatement i would say. elena, tell us about axios s new reporting about the
