Samsung announces sequels to last year s smash-hit Galaxy A-series phones
Samsung s been killing it with its mid-range offerings lately. We loved last year s Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 between those and the higher-end S20 FE, the company had a lot to offer those of us who didn t want to drop a grand on a phone in 2020. Today, Samsung announced three new additions to its sub-flagship lineup: the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G, and Galaxy A72. They ve got some big shoes to fill.

Galaxy A52, A52 5G, and A72 now official with some fantastic features
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G, and Galaxy A72 today at its first-ever Unpacked event for mid-range phones, and boy are these phones good. The number of upgrades these phones bring over their predecessors is nothing short of amazing, and it’s also great to see that Samsung has brought features typically reserved for its flagships to the Galaxy A52/A52 5G and Galaxy A72.
90Hz/120Hz displays, Snapdragon processors for every market
Let’s start with the screens: The Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 feature 6.5-inch and 6.7-inch Infinity-O Super AMOLED panels with a 90Hz refresh rate, while the A52 5G gets a 120Hz display. These aren’t the first mid-range phones with high refresh rate displays from Samsung, but they may be the first ones with the power to handle the higher refresh rate, thanks to the fact that the A52 and A72 are both powered by the Snapdragon 720G processor while the A52 5G gets the S
Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series might be expensive (in
this economy?!) but the company’s new A series models are far easier on the wallet - and all without abandoning everything you might expect from a serious smartphone. Available from today, the 6.5in
Galaxy A52 5G (£399) and
6.7in Galaxy A72 (£419) both come with Super AMOLED Infinity-O screens, quad rear camera setups (64MP with OIS; ultra-wide; macro; and zoom), IP67 waterproofing, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of built-in storage and octa-core processors. The A52 5G is the slightly better-equipped model, with 5G and a 120Hz screen, while the A72 has a 90Hz display and 3x optical zoom on one of its rear cameras. Both models are available in a range of colours named (yes, really) Awesome Violet, Awesome Blue, Awesome Black and Awesome White. Does A stand for Awesome, do you think – or Affordable?

Samsung makes the best cheap Android phones, with the Galaxy A lineup selling tens of millions of units every year. The South Korean manufacturer got rid of the Galaxy J series two years ago and folded those devices into the Galaxy A lineup as well, and as a result, it now includes options that cost under $100. At the other end of the price bracket, you ll find robust mid-range options like the Galaxy A71.
The Galaxy A series has taken on an increased significance over the last year as potential buyers switched to the Galaxy A51 or A71 in place of the Galaxy S20 series as a way to save some cash. With the Galaxy A32, Samsung is adding a few exciting features: there s now a 90Hz AMOLED screen and 64MP camera at the back, with Samsung positioning the high refresh rate as a differentiator for the device.
