he has basically declared war on the catholic church, i think you ll see a very severe reaction to the idea of a radical obama administration imposing secular rules on religion. that was newt gingrich on meet the press yesterday criticizing the rule requiring religious affiliated organizations to provide coverage for contraception. we talked a lot last week about t komen, and their decision to withdrawal funding to planned parenthood and now reversing that. it seems like this is going to be an issue that is discussed and debated hotly in the next couple of months. it s a huge issue, it s a false issue. speaking as a catholic, we know
so hesitant to talk about it. and yet it was his time out of the bubble. when he was doing missi inin work, he was dealing with poor people and his role of leadership in the boston area mormon church, he was dealing with a lot of people much less fortunate than he is. because he is so reluctant to talk about mormonism and the stuff had in the church, he does not connect with the voters is that are not as affluent. i think that mitt romney seems that it s too hard for him to go out and wear his religion on his sleeve. isn t that a commentary on the evolution of the republican party. the interesting thing to me is his father ran for president,
woken asleeping giant on this. there are catholics that say, i don t know, that doesn t seem right to me. i think that newt gingrich taps into a part of the independent voters that the government has gone too far in a lot of areas in our lives. no matter your affiliation, those are areas that people do not want the government to be in. talking about a war on religion for newt gingrich is as old as ted dy bears. it a smart move for him to be talking this way. this is most dangerous for the president if it goes beyond religion and becomes a metaphor for government intrusion. it will, this is the
that scares and turns off the evangelical base. how far can he go with it? this is a moment that he could throw the doors open and say why this is why this religion is great and why i believe in it. we are talking about how far republicans have become so religion. you have one of the most godly man that has ran for the president, but it s the wrong type of godly for them. on paper he should be doing great. but he is doing great because of his money. he have a de he is a deeply devout man, and he is a wonderful family man. knows how to recognize successful business and mknows how to dump one when it not successful. should be able to talk about it.
his idea there s a war on religion, who is denied the right it to religion in the country. they re not. with their do the hospitals get federal dollars. i m sure some do. and you can t, you can t discriminate based on federal dollars. according to the institute, 98% of catholic women report using birth control at some point. it s not available to poor women or women who can t get the same resources or don t have the same resources as more economically sound women. judy. i think what s interesting is that 93 of the 195 dioces in this country had their bishops speaking about this issue and yet, it wasn t a news story, it was relegated to the opinion pages pan i think it does qualify as news, no matter which position you take on it. jon: you think the media are ignoring this issue. i think they underplayed it, it s an important issue, but i am totally with alan, that this is not a war on
