In a few days the waiting game will be a thing of the past as the $50.1m Awakino tunnel bypass project is fully opened to all vehicles. Person airlifted to hospital after car crashes over Awakino Gorge bank

A person was flown to Taranaki Base Hospital after a crash in the Awakino Gorge on Friday. A person has been airlifted to hospital with head injuries after their car went over a bank in the Awakino Gorge, north of Mōkau. The crash happened about two-kilometres north of the Junction Service Station on State Highway 3 on Friday. Emergency Services were called around 11.40am to reports of a car, with a single occupant, going over a bank. The person was out of the vehicle and had suffered injuries to the head, a police spokeswoman said. A helicopter was called to the scene and airlifted the patient in a moderate condition to Taranaki Base Hospital.

Emergency services were called to the Awakino Gorge, north of New Plymouth, around 4.40am. A police media spokeswoman said original reports were that two trucks and a car had crashed and the road was completely blocked. The spokeswoman said the crash had turned out to involve one truck and a car, and could not find any more details on the road’s closure.
