A WOMAN who served as Kendal mayor on two occasions and was a town councillor for more than 20 years has died at the age of 82. Avril Dobson was described as devoted to her community and dedicated to service for the greater good of the whole of Kendal by the incumbent mayor, Cllr Doug Rathbone. In keeping with tradition, the town hall s flag will be flown at half-mast on Tuesday, the day of her funeral. Mrs Dobson was mayor of Kendal in 1994 and 2002. She served as a councillor for the Kirkland ward between 1976 and 2006 - with a short break during this time - constituting an impressive 24 years of service.

The son of a former mayor who served her local community for more than two decades has paid tribute to her life.
Avril Dobson, who served as a Kendal Town Councillor for the Kirkland ward between 1976 and 2006 and served as mayor on two occasions – has died at the age of 82.
She passed away at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary on May 3 after suffering heart failure.
“She was a good mother, quite strict,” remembers son Russell, 63.
“We were brought up to look after ourselves. She wasn’t going to iron for you. If you didn’t do it, you weren’t getting it done.
