New, preliminary research from the American Heart Association found that regular marijuana use may raise the risk of heart failure, stroke, or heart attack. Neither study can confirm direct causation, but both note a correlation between daily marijuana use and cardiovascular events.
Two separate studies examined the long-term use of marijuana and the impact it may have on the heart. The first study showed that daily cannabis use increases the risk of developing heart failure by 34%. The second study found that older cannabis users are more likely to have a heart attack or other heart event during hospital stays.
Clinicians need to ask patients about marijuana as more observational studies are finding a link with marijuana use and cannabis use disorder and cardiovascular outcomes, researchers say.
