ADPH spokesman Ryan Easterling in a message to APR on Wednesday said the department was finalizing its school toolkit which will follow CDC guidance on masks in schools, which the CDC updated Tuesday.
CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky told reporters Tuesday that the change in mask recommendations comes after new data on the delta variant shows that viral loads carried by the vaccinated are as high as those carried by the unvaccinated, meaning the vaccinated can transmit the virus.
“In recent days I have seen new scientific data from recent outbreak investigations showing that that delta variant behaves uniquely differently from past strains of the virus that cause COVID-19,” Walensky said, also noting, however, that the CDC believes vast majority of transmission is occurring in unvaccinated people and through unvaccinated people.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - As some school districts opt to make masking optional in their classrooms, some teachers are uneasy to see the shift before the school year ends.
Most school districts in the state are keeping masks through the end of the year, but I am told teachers are split on how they feel.
A local teacher’s union leader says there’s some anxiety out there as some districts change their policies.
“I don’t really understand why some districts would take the mask away right now,” said Richard Franklin, Birmingham ATF president.

BESSEMER, Ala. (WBRC) - Students who have experienced learning online during the pandemic are showing symptoms of something educators are calling a âCOVID slide,â or a brain dump of certain lessons and skills.
Bessemer City Schools is holding what theyâre calling a âthird semester,â a more intensive version of summer school.
Third semester is a more targeted and enriched learning program that will involve re-teaching and going back through some of the concepts that were interrupted or were just a little tougher to grasp than normal, given the circumstances of learning them during the course of the pandemic.
