I expected the Roam to be small, but I was still struck by just how tiny it feels. The triangular speaker is just over six and a half inches tall and weighs less than a pound. If Sonos wanted to make something that people could take anywhere without thinking about it, they succeeded. I’ve brought it all over the house as well as out (on the few occasions I’ve been able to leave the house lately, anyway).
Like most Sonos speakers, the Roam is primarily made of a hard plastic, with an intricately-drilled front grille and rubberized caps on the top and bottom. The top has buttons for volume up and down, play / pause and muting the microphone. It’s become de rigueur to call the Sonos Move a luggable speaker rather than a portable one. Tipping the scales at six pounds, the Move delivers big, bold, yet refined sound that you can take to the backyard, the park, or even the beach, but it’s a hefty, bulky smart speaker better suited to the trunk of a car than the confines of a backpack.
With the compact, lightweight Roam, Sonos is aiming for a speaker that you’d cheerfully toss into a purse or a knapsack, but without compromising well, not

It’s very small and neat, too, and sounds almost impossibly good for such a tiny thing but there’s no getting past the fact that it costs nearly as much as an Amazon Echo Studio, and more than double the price of a decent Bluetooth speaker like the Tronsmart Force.
That being said, the Sonos Roam does squeeze a lot into its diminutive, Toblerone-shaped frame. In addition to Bluetooth connectivity, which is a given for any battery powered speaker, the Roam connects to Wi-Fi while you’re in range of your home network for full integration into an existing Sonos multi-room system – and it covers off every type of music streaming technology you can think of.
