On Thursday, February 4, 2021, a federal appeals court passed that Virginia sheriff’s deputies denied a Black man his rights spelt out in the constitution. The man was arrested in April 2017 for failure to show his identification card.
The 4th U.S Circuit Court of Appeals partly nullified a ruling that was passed by a lower court, concerning the arrest of a Black man, George Wingate. The Stafford County deputies held that his arrest was valid. The deputies referred to a local ruling that justifies the showing of the identification to local authorities for purposes of public safety.
