Canadian families struggling to access autism therapy as they wait for a national strategy     TORONTO (CTV Network) While Friday marks World Autism Awareness Day, some Canadians say the federal government’s long-promised national strategy isn’t coming fast enough with affordable and accessible support varying drastically between provinces. Tiffany Baker, who’s seven-year-old son Kameron has autism, says she has faced heartbreaking roadblocks in gaining access to autism therapy in Trenton, Ont. Like many other children his age, Baker told CTV National News that Kameron loves to dance and have fun, but he has difficulties with social issues and communication.

In Nova Scotia, the Richmond Arena plans to introduce weekly sensory-friendly skates.(Melanie Ferrier/CBC) Nova Scotia s Richmond County is planning to host weekly sensory-friendly skates for children with sensory sensitivities. Places like skating rinks can be overwhelming to people with certain disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, because of the loud noises and bright lights. During the sensory-friendly skate, the Richmond Arena in Louisdale plans to dim its lights and reduce noise by asking skaters to speak softly. There will be fewer people in the arena and regular rink maintenance will be suspended during the skate.
