More than 600 autism sensory kits are now in the hands of Utah Highway Patrol Troopers and will be used to help respond to community members experiencing mental challenges.
COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS Cheryl Smith says sometimes just going to a convenience store with her son can be a challenge.
Her son, Carson, who turns 23 in a few weeks, is 6 feet tall, weighs 300 pounds and ranks high on the autism scale. During a recent store visit, he put his head under a fountain drink machine to drink out of it, opened a bag of chips in the store, took a drink of coffee which he didn t like and poured it out, and then took a bite out of an apple at the counter before putting it back in its display area.
SANDY Officer misconduct and the recently completed Utah legislative session were the two big issues at the quarterly Peace Officer Standards and Training Council meeting held Tuesday in Sandy.
The council meets, in part, to review allegations of misconduct by officers and to hand down discipline that can range from a letter of condemnation to revoking an officer s certification. All sworn officers in Utah must be certified by the agency.
Four officers were either from the Utah Department of Corrections or Adult Probation and Parole. The others were employed by Brigham City, South Salt Lake, the Carbon County Sheriff s Office, or Ogden police at the time of their violations.
The quarterly Peace Officer Standards and Training Council meeting held Tuesday dealt with disciplining officer misconduct and looking at the police reform bills passed during the recently completed Utah legislative session.
