Home working devastates Glasgow city centre businesses during Covid

HOME WORKING has had a devastating impact on businesses in the city centre with many forced to cease trade and others facing the brink of collapse. Despite easing of Covid restrictions, the loss of office staff to the area has had a “profound” effect on nearby shops and cafes. Firm bosses have united for a second time this year under the Glasgow City Centre Small Business Alliance to warn more closures loom if additional support is not provided during the pandemic.  Jim Ronald - who was the co-owner of Food Fillas on Queen Street and on Renfield Street - recently had to let nine members of his staff go after coming to a “crunch point”.

Scottish budget: Borders Tories criticise spending plans

Scottish finance minister Kate Forbes delivered the spending plans in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday (January 28). But Borders MP John Lamont and MSP Rachael Hamilton – both Conservatives – believe that the draft budget does not do enough to protect businesses and jobs. Mrs Hamilton said: The budget does little in addressing the issues at hand as a result of COVID, and it doesn’t go nearly far enough.
