Comments from New Zealand s Foreign Affairs Minister last week sparked outrage in the United Kingdom and Australia, with concern Aotearoa isn t taking a strong enough line against China. Over recent months, New Zealand has been criticised for not being party to some Five Eyes statements on human rights abuses in China. Instead, Aotearoa has often released its own or joined with Australia in commenting. On Monday last week, Nanaia Mahuta said the Five Eyes wasn t always the most appropriate group to comment on human rights issues and she was uncomfortable with expanding its remit to non-security matters.

Nanaia Mahuta s comments about the Five Eyes alliance this week blindsided Australian officials, according to a new report released as the Aussie Foreign Affairs Minister arrives in New Zealand.  Mahuta on Monday said New Zealand was uncomfortable with expanding the remit of the intelligence-sharing partnership to comment on issues broader than those relating to security.  New Zealand has been very clear, certainly in this term and since we ve held the portfolio, not to invoke the Five Eyes as the first point of contact on messaging out on a range of issues that really exist out of the remit of the Five Eyes, the minister said.
