ABC, AIDC, Northern Pictures announce Indigenous Documentary Placement

May 28th, 2021 By David Knox Make a commentFiled under: News, Filmmaker Daniel King has been named the inaugural recipient of the Indigenous Documentary Placement, a new initiative co-presented by the ABC, Northern Pictures and the Australian Documentary Conference. Daniel, a descendent of the Yuin and Awabakal nations, will develop his skills in documentary, factual development and production through an eight-month placement with the ABC and Northern Pictures from late May. Daniel is a documentary filmmaker, cinematographer and editor who, for more than a decade, has focused on telling the stories of First Nations peoples. He directed the 2020 feature-length documentary Trading Cultures, screened on NITV / SBS, which traced the collaboration between three Indigenous Australian artists and three artists from Makassar in South Sulawesi.

Without quotas in 2020 here s what happened

With a global pandemic hitting the screen sector hard last year, Free to Air networks Seven, Nine and 10 were amongst those relieved of meeting normal content quotas for 2020. The good news is they still far exceeded the quotas required in screening local content. They also exceeded the normal minimum requirement in Documentary. But the more disappointing news was there were targets missed in Drama and Children’s Television. Seven met the Drama quota, but was dismally low in Children’s TV. 10 just missed the annual quota in Drama, opting hold off Five Bedrooms after it resumed production, and fell short in Children’s TV overall.
