Twitter has announced it has partnered the Australian Bureau of Statistics to launch a dedicated search prompt.
The announcement:
The public conversation on Twitter is never more important than during major civic events, the cornerstones of our democracy. Today, we want to provide an update on Twitter’s efforts with regard to the 2021 Australian Census.
This year, Census Night is taking place on Tuesday, 10 August 2021, and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) will count every person and household in Australia.
The Census is coming this August. Your answers help plan local services for individuals, families and communities.
We still rely on estimations about the makeup of Australia s LGBTIQ population.

Have you received your Census form in the mail? Had a quick flip through? Well, you might have noticed that yet again, it does not ask any questions regarding sexual orientation.
The Australian Census is the nation’s largest survey that tracks changes in population, housing, health conditions, religion and more. Its robust data is used by governments and advocacy groups to help decide where to direct funding. So you would think that it would be rather important that it ask about sexuality, particularly when we have no clear idea of the diversity of sexual orientation in Australia. Instead, the number of queer people in Australia are estimated from smaller surveys and studies.

Every person to be counted in 2021 Census: Australia
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today launched the 2021 Census campaign, with national advertising starting on Sunday 4 July.
The campaign will support the roll-out of Australia’s 18th Census, which is being held on Tuesday 10 August.
The 2021 Census message is that ‘Every stat tells a story’. The campaign will include tailored communication in up to 29 languages to help ensure Australia’s multicultural communities are informed and ready to participate.
Chris Libreri, Census General Manager, said the 2016 Census showed that our diversity is increasing.
“With nearly half of Australians either born overseas or with one or both parents born overseas, it’s important for our multicultural communities to have information about the Census in their language, in particular new migrants who will be doing the Australian Census for the first time.
Lockdowns and restrictions disrupted the lives of most Australians, but the impacts on one hard-hit group, nomads, have been largely overlooked. We don't even know how many of them there are.
