With the passing of Glenn Waller, Australia has lost one of its pre-eminent authorities on Russia. As President of ExxonMobil Russia, he had the esteem and affection of the company chief executives he served, including Rex Tillerson, who would go on to become the US Secretary of State in 2017.
Waller developed a close working relationship with Igor Sechin, the much-feared former GRU (Russia’s largest foreign-intelligence agency) agent at the helm of the Russian state oil company, Rosneft, as well as earning the respect of Vladimir Putin, who saw him as a skilled communicator and friend of the Russian people.
