Australia's COVID-19 infections hovered near record levels on Tuesday as a surge of infections caused by the Omicron variant put a strain on hospitals already stretched by staff isolating after being exposed to the virus.
Australia on Monday surpassed 1 million COVID-19 cases, with more than half of them recorded in the past week, as the Omicron variant ripped through most of the country driving up hospitalisation numbers and putting a strain on supply chains.
New South Wales, the worst-hit state by Covid-19 in Australia, has reimposed wearing of masks indoors. New South Wales recorded 5,715 new cases, up from 3,763 on Wednesday.
