Tulsa finally grabs a February home win
Last Tuesday, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane played the Tulane Green Wave at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, finally winning their first home game this month as they pulled away 72-66 to snap a three-game losing streak.
The game started out going back and forth, as Tulsa and Tulane exchanged scoring in roughly equal portions for the first eight minutes of the game. At this point, the game was tied at 10 points each. After this, Brandon Rachal made two free throws, and Tulsa took the lead. Throughout the rest of the first half, both teams continued to score, but Tulsa slowly began to compile a lead over their opponent. At the halftime break, Tulsa led the game by a score of 30-22.
Two Tulsa Comebacks Fall Short
Last week, the Golden Hurricane played two games at the Reynolds Center. The first game was on Wednesday, Feb. 3 against the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs. The second game was on Saturday, Feb. 6 against the University of Central Florida (UCF) Bulls.
In the first game, SMU got ahead early, but twice in the first half TU tied the game only for the Mustangs to immediately regain the lead. In the second half, Tulsa had a strong comeback at the end of the game. With just under three and a half minutes remaining in the game, Tulsa trailed by twelve points. Rey Idowu made a jumper to bring the Golden Hurricane to within ten points with three minutes remaining. Following this Brandon Rachal made several shots and Tulsa came within six points. TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Kendric Davis had 22 points and 10 assists and SMU held off Tulsa for a 65-63 win on Wednesday night.
SMU led 64-52 with 3:25 remaining. A 10-1 run, capped by Austin Richie’s jumper, pulled Tulsa to 65-62 with 30 seconds to go. SMU’s Yor Anei blocked Curtis Haywood II’s layup, and following timeouts from both teams, Brandon Rachal missed a potential game-tying 3 with four seconds left.
But Tyson Jolly fouled Richie on a 3-point attempt. Richie missed the first free throw, made the second shot, and then Feron Hunt grabbed the rebound from the third shot to seal it for the Mustangs.
