A Texas congressman may be in the running to replace Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming as the GOP s House conference chair. House Republicans ousted Cheney from the position on Wednesday, partly because she voted to impeach Donald Trump last year. Rep. Chip Roy, an Austin Republican, may be considering a run against Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, who is interested in the post. House Republicans are expected to vote on a new conference chair, the third highest spot in party House leadership, on Friday.

WASHINGTON U.S. Rep. Chip Roy called Senate Republicans “utterly worthless” and “an absolute embarrassment” for helping pass a bill aimed at quelling a growing number of hate crimes against Asian Americans during the pandemic.
The bill, which would create a position at the Justice Department to oversee prosecution of hate crimes related to the pandemic and expand avenues to report such incidents, drew the support of nearly every Republican in the Senate, including two of Roy’s former bosses U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn.
