The April 12 police killing of Black teenager Anthony Thompson Jr. inside of a bathroom at Knoxville's Austin-East Magnet High School has sparked a wave of protests throughout the city. Thompson is the school's fifth student to die at the hands of gun violence this year, and many in the Black community say they've reached a boiling point. We go to the frontlines of demonstrations to speak with activists, teachers, and longtime city residents who say they're committed to disrupting the peace in order to call attention to systemic failures plaguing the Black community in Knoxville. East Knoxville community sends Austin East students off to prom, giving hope in tough times After losing five classmates in less than three months, the community came out to show their love and support to Austin East students headed to prom. They were given a prom in true Hollywood fashion, with attendees dressed to the nines. Many said they were excited to dress up and celebrate the evening after the community went through such tough times. Several students were lost due to gun violence, and a police shooting killed a 17-year-old student in one of the school s bathrooms.

Knoxville Woman Apologizes for Calling Police on Anthony J Thompson Jr

Last week, The Rootreported that 17-year-old Anthony J. Thompson Jr. was shot and killed by police officers in the restroom of Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville, Tenn., after police responded to a call about a “possibly armed” student. Advertisement Law enforcement officials originally reported that before he was killed, Anthony shot one of the officers who had gone into the restroom with their guns drawn, but later they corrected the report saying the bullet that hit the officer didn’t come from Anthony’s gun and that the gun had gone off during a struggle. Now, the woman who called the police in the first place who turns out to be the mother of Anthony’s girlfriend is apologizing for calling the cops, and says she never indicated that Anthony was armed.
